What’s the deal with ebooks? What is an ebook? For those who don’t know, its basically anelectronic book. It can contain text, graphics/pictures and weblinks. Therefore it is quite a dynamic book. Browsing theinternet you can will find many ebooks in the self-help,self-motivation and advice category. Another category isbusiness manual’s, many of these offer marketing tips orpromotional material. A third area would be educational, such asreference, research and textbooks. Then you have the fictionmarket, Websites like Barnes and noble have abandoned theirebook stores for lack of sales and profit. Perhaps their focuswas wrong or the public are not ready for the digital novel. Theproblem with books we read for fun is people still like to holda book rather than an electronic gadget. Something to read whiletaking a bath. it’s a matter of the publics perspective. Withmessy issue of digital rights many ebooks are copy protected,unlike its paper cousin you cant just lend it out to your circleof friends. Though some sites have abandoned the ebook atpresent, there are still sites that stock ebooks like Amazon.com, a typical price would be $2.50(£1.36) Another good site isFictionwise.com, they have an extensive rage of ebooks byestablish authors. So how useful are ebooks? Are they the future of modern reading?For those reading for fun such as novels, it doesn’t seem toappeal to the majority of people. But maybe as technologyprogresses it will become more appealing and easier to use. Somein the meantime be inclined to read short stories or serialisedpulp fiction. But most will stick to the traditional printedbook. In other circles though the ebook may excel, storing textbooks and reference material in a digital format will useful tobusiness men/women and students alike. Not only what the weightbe easier, but searching for a particular passage or relatedinformation could be done in moments. Perhaps the ebook isn’tintegrated into society yet but its here to stay.
